International conference on the steel industry sustainability is a highlight at ABM WEEK’s 6 th edition
The steel industry is facing one of the greatest challenges since the Industrial Revolution: the transition into a low-carbon economy. To succeed in this process, the industry needs to adopt new technologies within a short time span that lead to innovation, energy efficiency, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
In such a scenario, this topic will deserve special attention during the 6th edition of ABM WEEK, a yearly event promoted by ABM, the Brazilian Metallurgy, Materials, and Mining Association. The 4th EMECR – International Conference on Energy and Material Efficiency and CO2 Reduction in the Steel Industry 2022 will be an integral part of the technical-scientific week program, to take place at Pro Magno Centro de Eventos, São Paulo, from June 7 to 9, 2022.
Held for the first time in Brazil, this international conference is part of the ISSI (International Society of Steel Institutes) calendar and will be the perfect occasion to present and debate the main breakthroughs and efforts of both academia and industry for a more sustainable steel industry.
“EMECR has addressed sustainability in the global steel industry since its first edition in 2011 in Germany and subsequent editions in England and Japan, which took place in 2014 and 2017, respectively. The event is part of ISSI, an entity in which ABM has participated actively. Notwithstanding the great interest of several associations from other major steel producing countries, Brazil and ABM got unanimous support to host the fourth edition," José Noldin, chairman of the 4th EMECR, said.
According to Noldin, EMECR has been one of the most important forums when it comes to discussing the decarbonization of the world steel industry. “The conference helps us understand the obstacles and existing technological possibilities in terms of energy efficiency and CO2 reduction in the steel industry. In my view, events like EMECR help the industry to cope with such challenges and allow us to work out decarbonization plans and commitments that are clear, reliable, and realistic from a scientific and technological standpoint.”
The chairman of the 4th EMECR believes that holding the event in Brazil will bring important contributions to the local steel industry. “Brazil has a great vocation as a steel producer. We have high-quality iron ore, favorable geographical conditions, and excellent experts, courses, and players. In such a context, the country is set to play a leading role in the steel industry of the future! EMECR will enhance the debate and certainly give rise to strategies and information that are crucial for the development and transition of the Brazilian steel industry in the face of society’s new demands,” Noldin adds.
Paper submission
In the same way as other ABM WEEK events, EMECR 2022 will also feature technical sessions for work presentations. Researchers, professionals, and students may submit their contributions for the 4th edition latest by February 20.
